Kenyan Canadian Association - KCA is a federal not-for-profit organization that seeks to address the issues affecting marginalized black Canadians and other racialized groups while assisting newcomers to settle and make a positive contribution in the society as they endeavor to achieve their goals.

KCA also focuses on implementing programs and specifically offering services to newcomers, low-income families and other socially-excluded groups residing in Canada to improve their personal well-being and social-economic status.

KCA works collaboratively with organizations and stakeholders through our grassroot network across the country.

 

Newcomers Information Webinar

Objective
The objective was to provide newcomers with information about addressing common challenges faced by newcomers as they settle including how to cope with the accompanying emotional stress of moving to a new country.

Summary
The webinar kicked off with a presentation on KCA, its objectives, programs and initiatives by Ephraim Mwaura, the President of KCA. Mwaura also presented an overview and achievements so far under the Canadian Red Cross project which included distribution of grocery cards to 40 beneficiaries from marginalized groups across the greater Toronto area (GTA).

The Newcomers and Settlement, Catherine Matimu, provided an overview of the program and the upcoming activities of the program in 2021. Sunir Chandaria, Kenyan Honorary Council in Toronto who was the Special Guest Speaker outlined the consular services available through the Kenyan Mission in Canada. He urged newcomers to join communities, including virtual ones to help cope better with the COVID-19 pandemic. Swaleh Abdallah, a Certified Public Accountant professional in Toronto provided practical personal finance management adviceand steps newcomers can make to start building their credit and prepare themselves for home ownership. Mental health has been a great concern for Ontario residents as the COVID-19 pandemic presents various challenges for individuals and families. Dr. Florence Juma, a Registered Psychotherapist. And Ms. Eve Mpofu, a Therapeutic Counsellor provided information on how to selfidentify mood changes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

They also provided practical guidance on how newcomer parents can support their children to integrate better in the society. Joshua Makori, an Immigration Lawyer in Toronto, provided advice to help refugee claimants including information about legal aid and how to prepare for their hearings.

At the end of the webinar, there was a question and answer (Q&A) session to provide attendees an opportunity to ask questions relating to their personal circumstances. Additionally, there was a feedback form shared where they could provide KCA with their opinion on how effective the webinar presentations were and the level of organization.

Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada has partnered with Kenyan Canadian Association (KCA) for VOICE for Women and Girls (VOICE) project international volunteer opportunities available to Kenyan Diaspora Community in Canada and those who have returned to Kenya from Canada. VOICE offers opportunities for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to apply their knowledge that results in real impact for the people in rural communities.

Make a difference in the lives of girls and women while advancing gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.

The VOICE for Women and Girls (VOICE) project, a partnership between the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada and Global Affairs Canada, aims to strengthen the performance of developing country partner organizations to advance gender equality and economic empowerment of 50,000 women and men from marginalized communities. VOICE harnesses the knowledge, capacity, and expertise of skilled Canadian volunteers to assist developing country partners improve gender equality while implementing more sustainable, innovative, and inclusive initiatives for women.

Commitments range from six months to a year.

Kenyan Canadian Association - KCA, a federal not-for-profit incorporated in 2019 that implements programs that focus on the racialized and other marginalized groups is recruiting new Regional Chairs at the grassroot level to join our Council for the remaining three-year term upto July 31,2025. The term for a KCA Council member is 6 years.


We are seeking innovative, energetic, enthusiastic, self-starters, task-driven leaders who are team players committed to uphold KCA values and adhere to our code of conduct while executing their mandates as Regional Chairs.

Regional Chair positions are open for the following regions:
 
1. Quebec
2. Hamilton
3. Edmonton
4. Saskatchewan
5. Northern Territories
6. Prince Edward Island (PEI)

Regional Chair Position Summary:
The Regional Chair will report directly to the KCA President and will execute their mandate in coordination with the Head of Council. 

The Regional Chair will work closely with the KCA Secretariat and Program Directors and will oversee all KCA activities in their region.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Closely work with other Council members to formulate work plans then implement those transformative plans in their region
  • Act as the grassroot liaison for the program activities and projects in the region
  • Coordinate KCA events and projects in the region in collaboration with project teams and program committees.
  • Proactively represent KCA at official functions, events and meetings with municipal and provincial officials as well as political leaders and stakeholders in the region
  • Where applicable, organize flag-raising, commemoration and proclamation functions in collaboration with city protocol offices
  • Address regional administrative issues in a timely manner by working with the Secretariat and KCA Program teams
  • Facilitate good working relationship with municipalities, political & community leaders as well as other strategic partners in their region
  • Submit periodic reports to the Secretariat through the Head of Council & President – ad hoc, quarterly, half-year and annual
  • Undertake other Regional activities and initiatives in consultation with the President.

Recognizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage, Mosope advocates for Africans to embrace indigenous languages, strengthening ties to ancestral roots and promoting diverse cultures. Mosope's project, "Reimagining Africa," aims to showcase the continent's cultural heritage through a multimedia campaign, fostering global appreciation and understanding. 

 

Hoops for Empowerment: Malko Young's Basketball Initiative with Micro-Grant Youth Program

Malko Young shares his initiative during a workshop on February 3, 2024.

Dedicated to youth empowerment through basketball, Malko's "Improved Basketball Skills" program enhances participants' abilities in dribbling, shooting, and teamwork. By fostering physical fitness and leadership, Malko's holistic approach emphasizes character development, life skills, and mentorship, promoting confidence, academic success, and community engagement.

 

Empowering Black Students: Akera Otto’s STEM Access Initiative with Micro-Grant Youth Program

Akera Otto outlines his vision during a workshop on February 3, 2024.

Inspired by a Black student Hackathon he attended; Akera aims to transform their Python 3 program into a user-friendly app. With the grant, they plan to refine the code and hire a computer scientist by November. By January, beta testing will commence at McMaster University. Akera's project aims to empower Black students in STEM, providing vital resources and opportunities.

 

Cultivating Cultural Connections: Odilia's Community Engagement initiative

Odilia Nkosi shares her vision during the workshop on February 3, 2024.

Inspired by her heritage, Odilia plans to use the grant to organize cultural events like music performances and language classes, as well as a community roller skating night. These initiatives aim to promote cultural preservation and community engagement.

 

 

Empowering Sustainable Fashion: Melody's Clothing Swap Initiative with Micro-Grant Youth Program

Melody Vuliye shares her initiative during a workshop on February 3, 2024.

Melody’s project, "The Clothing Swap Initiative," focuses on hosting three clothing swap events across GTA colleges and universities. These events aim to promote sustainable fashion practices and reduce textile waste in the communities. By providing students with a platform to exchange clothing items, Melody and team foster conscious consumption and community engagement.

The goal is to empower youth with affordable, high-quality clothing options while advocating for sustainability and the circular economy. Through breaking financial barriers and encouraging clothing reuse and recycling, they aim to create a sense of community and inspire a greener future.
