Kenyan Canadian Association - KCA is a federal not-for-profit organization that seeks to address the issues affecting marginalized black Canadians and other racialized groups while assisting newcomers to settle and make a positive contribution in the society as they endeavor to achieve their goals.

KCA also focuses on implementing programs and specifically offering services to newcomers, low-income families and other socially-excluded groups residing in Canada to improve their personal well-being and social-economic status.

KCA works collaboratively with organizations and stakeholders through our grassroot network across the country.

 

2023 Pamoja Soccer Tournament

Brampton, Canada - November 19, 2023

The Inaugural Pamoja Soccer Tournament ended yesterday November 18 2023 with Wazalendo FC representing Kenya clinching the Championship Trophy and Gold Medal. The tournament which aims at promoting Youth Mental Health and Well-being kicked off took place at SaveMax Sports Centre in Brampton. The inaugural event organized by Kenyan Canadian Association to unite communities through the spirit of sports, showcased an exciting lineup of teams competing for glory representing Kenya, Côte d'Ivoire, Uganda and Tanzania. The soccer spectacle also served as a compelling precursor to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in Toronto and Vancouver.

The final matches featured Ivory FC (Côte d'Ivoire) facing off with Toronto Select FC (Uganda) for Bronze Medal while Zan Heroes FC (Tanzania) contested for Gold Medal with Wazalendo FC (Kenya).

Kenya took Gold after beating Tanzania 4-3 in a highly contested match as Tanzania was top of the table heading to the finals by goals difference and only needed a draw to win the tournament championship. Both teams also had 6 points before the finals.

Uganda thrashed Côte d'Ivoire 5-4 to settle for Bronze.

The official final results of the tournament were as follows:

  1. Team Trophy Winner / Gold Medal - Kenya (Wazalendo FC)
  2. Team Trophy 2nd Place / Silver Medal - Tanzania (Zan Heroes FC)
  3. Team Trophy 3rd Place / Bronze Medal - Uganda (Toronto Select FC)
  4. Best Goal Keeper / Golden Glove - Anwar Suleiman (Tanzania)
  5. Best Scorer / Golden Boot - Ayub Moses (Kenya)
  6. Best Player / Trophy - Richard Nene (Kenya)

Table standings:

  1. Kenya - 9 points
  2. Tanzania - 6 points
  3. Uganda - 3 points
  4. Côte d'Ivoire - 0 points

At the heart of the 2023 Pamoja Soccer Tournament lies the unwavering commitment to cross-cultural integration. The tournament serves as a powerful platform to strengthen bonds between diverse communities in Canada, fostering understanding and appreciation through sports to create a harmonious environment where everyonefeels a sense of belonging.

The Tournament has been generously funded through the Ontario Youth Wellness Grant (OYWG), aimed at enhancing wellness programs for Black youth in Ontario.

Kenyan Canadian Association is pleased to announce that the Community Sport for All Initiative (CSAI) funding is now open for applications.

The Community Sport for All Initiative (CSAI), through the generous funding from the Government of Canada, seeks to remove barriers and increase sport participation rates for underrepresented groups. Its key objective is to support community sport initiatives for equity-deserving groups, in particular, Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQQIA+, low income and newcomers to increase participation and retention in sport.

Kenyan Canadian Association (KCA) has received Community Sport for All Initiative grant from the Government of Canada that will be disbursed to grassroot sport organizations and clubs serving underrepresented groups in the mid and long-distance running. This fund will mainly support black-led and black-serving sports organizations, including incorporated non-profit organizations and registered charities across Canada.

The funding has two application streams. 

  1. Event management
  2. Club support

L’initiative Le sport communautaire pour tous, grâce au généreux financement du gouvernement du Canada, vise à éliminer les obstacles et à augmenter les taux de participation au sport pour les groupes sous-représentés. Son objectif principal est de soutenir les initiatives de sport communautaire pour les groupes dignes d’équité, en particulier les communautés noirs, autochtones, racisées, 2ELGBTQQIA+, à faible revenu, ainsi que les nouveaux arrivants afin d’accroître la participation au sport et le maintien de la pratique sportive.

L’Association kényane canadienne a reçu du gouvernement du Canada une subvention de l’initiative Le sport communautaire pour tous qui sera versée à des organismes communautaires  et à des clubs de sport au service de groupes sous-représentés dans les courses de moyenne et de longue distance. Cette subvention appuiera principalement les organismes sportives dirigées par des noirs et au service des noirs, y compris les organismes à but non lucratif constitués en société et les organismes de bienfaisance enregistrés partout au Canada.

Le subvention comporte deux volets de demande.

Community Sport for All Initiative (CSAI) grants are made possible by generous funding from the Government of Canada.

 

ABOUT THE GRANT

The Community Sport for All Initiative (CSAI) grant, through the generous funding from the Government of Canada, seeks to remove barriers and increase sport participation rates for underrepresented groups. Its key objective is to support community sport initiatives for equity-deserving groups, in particular, Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQQIA+, low income and newcomers to increase participation and retention in sport.

Kenyan Canadian Association (KCA) received Community Sport for All Initiative grant from the Government of Canada for disbursement to grassroot sport organizations and clubs serving underrepresented groups in the middle and long-distance running. This fund will mainly support black-led and black-serving sports organizations, including incorporated non-profit organizations and registered charities across Canada.

 APPLICATION STREAMS

The funding has two application streams.

  1. Event management

This stream entails funding to organizations on project planning and implementation for race events including 5K, 10k, Half Marathon, Marathon and Cross-Country. Eligible organizations can apply for funding between $10,000 and $30,000 Canadian Dollars (CAD) in this stream

  1. Club support

This stream entails clubs support for operational expenses like domain & email, website, running shoes & kits, training shoes & kits etc. Eligible organizations can apply for funding upto a maximum of $7,500 Canadian Dollars (CAD) in this stream

ELIGIBILITY & FUNDING CRITERIA

What is being funded:

  • Project proposals from charities and non-profits in Canada.
  • The proposals must be submitted only during application period.
  • We will not accept unsolicited proposals outside of the application period.

 What is NOT being funded:

  • Individuals
  • Profit-based organizations
  • Projects outside of Canada
  • Projects not solely or primarily focused on community sport initiatives for equity-deserving groups, in particular, Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQQIA+, low income and newcomers
  • Conferences, films or videos
  • Organizational overhead (including rent, utilities, salaries and capital expenditures such as furniture or computers)
  • Research

The deadline to submit applications is Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 11:59pm PST.

Grant Review Committee

Kenyan Canadian Association will engage a Grant Review Committee composed of a team of volunteers with professional background and experience in sports, events and project management to review the grant proposals.

Committee recommendations will be informed by the strength of the application, i.e., the extent to which the application aligns with the Community Sport for All Initiative objectives and regional distribution.

The Committee will make recommendations to the Sports & Recreation Program about which organizations to fund. The Sports & Recreation Program will give final approval to all grants awarded.

 Successful Applicants

Successful applicants must enter into a grant agreement with Kenyan Canadian Association. The agreement must be signed on behalf of the applicant(s) by the individual(s) who is/are an authorized member(s) or officer(s) of the organization as indicated in the application.

Successful applicants must have a bank account in the organization’s name to receive grant funding and submit a direct deposit form, completed, signed and authorized by their bank.

The requirements for providing evidence of organization status vary depending on the type of organization that is applying:

Registered Charity

If the applicant organization is a Registered Charity, the following documents are required to be submitted as part of the application:

If the Registered Charity is incorporated, a Corporation Profile Report or Corporation Information page is also required. The Corporation Profile Report must also list office address for the organization.

 Incorporated Non-Profit Organization

 If the applicant organization is an Incorporated Non-Profit Organization, the following document is required to be submitted as part of the application:

A Corporation Information Page or Corporation Profile Report must list office address for the organization.

  • If your organization is incorporated in the province, please refer your province business directory.

Malko Young shares his initiative during a workshop on February 3, 2024.

Dedicated to youth empowerment through basketball, Malko's "Improved Basketball Skills" program enhances participants' abilities in dribbling, shooting, and teamwork. By fostering physical fitness and leadership, Malko's holistic approach emphasizes character development, life skills, and mentorship, promoting confidence, academic success, and community engagement.

 

Empowering Black Students: Akera Otto’s STEM Access Initiative with Micro-Grant Youth Program

Akera Otto outlines his vision during a workshop on February 3, 2024.

Inspired by a Black student Hackathon he attended; Akera aims to transform their Python 3 program into a user-friendly app. With the grant, they plan to refine the code and hire a computer scientist by November. By January, beta testing will commence at McMaster University. Akera's project aims to empower Black students in STEM, providing vital resources and opportunities.

 

Cultivating Cultural Connections: Odilia's Community Engagement initiative

Odilia Nkosi shares her vision during the workshop on February 3, 2024.

Inspired by her heritage, Odilia plans to use the grant to organize cultural events like music performances and language classes, as well as a community roller skating night. These initiatives aim to promote cultural preservation and community engagement.

 

 

Empowering Sustainable Fashion: Melody's Clothing Swap Initiative with Micro-Grant Youth Program

Melody Vuliye shares her initiative during a workshop on February 3, 2024.

Melody’s project, "The Clothing Swap Initiative," focuses on hosting three clothing swap events across GTA colleges and universities. These events aim to promote sustainable fashion practices and reduce textile waste in the communities. By providing students with a platform to exchange clothing items, Melody and team foster conscious consumption and community engagement.

The goal is to empower youth with affordable, high-quality clothing options while advocating for sustainability and the circular economy. Through breaking financial barriers and encouraging clothing reuse and recycling, they aim to create a sense of community and inspire a greener future.
